Subject: RE: Commodity shed was on fire

south central WI
Some are saying a spark won't go that far, but they do. I was burning a large brush pile from a woodlot I was clearing. It wasn't 300 feet, but probably around 200'. Halfway thru the day, I noticed a tree was smoking in the woods. It had a knothole about 15 feet up and smoke was coming out of it. An ember had blown up and landed in the tree and lit it on fire.

Watch a brush fire at night, all those embers that fly up will glow for a long time. Each one could cause a fire if it lands on the right stuff.

I occasionally burn debris and there's an open commodity shed near the burn area, and there's chopped straw in it. I always watch the wind and make sure it's not blowing toward the straw. I've had enough close calls with fire, and seen a lot of fires caused by lack of thought or planning while on the fire dept.
