Whole shelled corn and 200 lbs/ ton Vita Plus Sirloin Builder Grower pellets. We move on to Sirloin Builder Finisher at about 600 lbs.

I did this for years, but have been adding 200 lbs. of whole oats per ton recently because we have it on hand due to raising oats to get small squares of straw for huts (and to have a place to haul manure in August is nice!)

I do put a screen in and grind the oats before adding whole shelled corn after the calves go on to the Finisher ration. I believe I've read here that there is a benefit to grinding oats when the critters pass 500 lbs. I've not tested the theory in practice for myself.

I do not get along well with cracked corn or trying to grind it coarsely. I always end up with fines and sorting.

I haven't had a problem with over eating as long as we start out letting them eat as much starter as they want from the day they start eating.
