Subject: Lack of Milk Post Calving

Had one heifer left to calve, and I was pretty sure she was open. Everyone else was done and she wasn't even making a bag. Fast forward a week or two, she had milk (some) in all 4 quarters and ended up calving.

The calf is 3 or 4 days old now and seems to be sucking all of the milk out of the heifer, and I am wondering if he is getting enough. He seems active and healthy but is switching from teat to teat, head butting and trying to get as much as he can. After noticing this I checked for milk last night and she was empty. Checked again this morning and there was some.

Is this normal? How do you decide if a heifer is making enough milk to keep her calf or not?
