How small # or how big # are you willing to put animals out on grass. I have a yard of maybe 650# heifers that have been on background tmr for about 60 days so I’m not sure they’d be a good candidate although they are far from fleshy. The pasture is mostly smooth brome with some native grasses and a lot of dead material underneath. It doesn’t have a set up to supplement with feed every couple days so I don’t think I would be able to add anything unless I pull a creep feeder in. Also, no other pasture around to worry about neighbors bull jumping in if I did turn heifers out. I won’t have enough pairs to fill pastures this year so I’m looking for options and maybe try something different. Maybe there’s a reason no one does it around here. If we figure 1.5-2 acres a pair for the immediate area, about how many calves could I plan on? Feel free to add any other thoughts.
