Pittsburg, Kansas | I still consider myself diabetic even though after 30-35 years of being type II diabetic (on multiple insulin shots a day for around 20-25 years) I now test as pre-diabetic (HbA1c 5.8 on zero medication). I know of other people personally who went from a diabetic diagnosis to non-diabetic based on their HbA1c test (they were newly diagnosed vs me being long term insulin dependent). Through diet change.
I usually use the term reversal. I reversed my disease. I know that if I went back to the way I was eating before (pretty much following guidlines of reduced sugar consumption and otherwise a generally "moderation is all things" type diet) I would very quickly be full blown diabetic on both pills and insulin shots again.
Reversal, remission, cure????? Whatever a person wants to call it, a low carb ketogenic diet with 20 or less grams total carbs a day changed my disease conventional medical wisdom said could not be reversed. It was a progressive disease that only got worse over time. That was completely true as long as I was following conventional medical and nutritional wisdom.
Low carb eating gave me my life back. I am pretty sure I would not be scuba diving today (like I am going out to do in a few minutes) and would be in much poorer health had I not chosen to go to a low carb ketogenic diet 6 years ago. Unbelievable health improvements. Multiple health improvements beyond just the reversal of my type II diabetes and losing a hundred pounds of extra fat.
