EC IL | I agree with JohnW. Drink more water than normal to thin the mucus.
In my experience on myself, I found that Doctor prescribed decongestants can be too aggressive. At about 9pm one evening (several hours after receiving the prescription) I took the first of what was supposed to be several doses of liquid decongestant during one of my first battles with Severe Adult-onset Asthmatic Bronchitis. Shortly after taking the medicine, it felt like all the mucus in my lungs broke loose at once, blocking airflow. So, then I got to gasp for breath while sitting very still for about 30 minutes in front of my young, scared children. I should have called 911.
I appreciate that event honestly because I learned that I had to better manage my lung health during respiratory illnesses without relying fully on the prescription medicines to do everything for me.
