| I went through some issues on this subject 2 years ago. I had dealt with some acid reflux issues in the past and when I was scheduled for a colonoscopy I asked the doctor if he could check my throat also. Well, they found I had a hiatal hernia in my stomach and the pyloric valve on the top of my stomach (bottom of esophagus) was shot. It had been getting to where if I lifted something heavy I had instant acid in my throat. I was on omeprazole. My doctor told me there was pre-cancerous cells and that it needed to be fixed. They fixed me up in same day surgery but it took about 10 hours from when I left the house to when I got home. For the pyloric valve they did the Nissan fundoplication. They put a scope down my throat, folded the esophagus over itself, stapled it together and I am told it pretty much is as close to the original pyloric valve as they can get at this time. This procedure does allow some burping and supposedly you can vomit if necessary but I can say I haven't had to in 2 years. The procedures used prior to this procedure being available truly do make it so you can't vomit or burp and I was really lucky I didn't have to do that. This procedure puts you as close back to normal as you can get today. They fixed the hiatal hernia by making 5 small cuts in my frontal area and went in with a camera, led light and tools to fix that. My surgeon also told me that if you stay on omeprazole for an extended period of time, it increases your chance of getting dementia. This guy does a lot of this and I trust his judgment and while I know people that are required to stay on omeprazole for the rest of their life, I'd say avoid it if possible. I had to gradually get back to regular eating over about a 6 week period. Also, I truly think my surgeon probably saved me from getting cancer.
