East of Broken Bow | Our Cabela's used to have a corner of the store that sold returned things at a discount. Could buy things like a chore coat that looked like new, but maybe had a little stain for less than half price of new, and some things with a little tear or bigger stain for a lot less. Friend of mine once bought a pair of insulated coveralls for $15, and he said they were the best ones he ever owned.
Now, however, it seems that returned things either go to the dumpster or get returned to the manufacturer. Back during Covid I was going to use my Cabelas bucks to buy a kayak, as most everything was shut down but the river. Found one in back of the store, but it had a black X on the tag. Assistant Manager said they were in the process of returning it to the manufacturer. I asked why, he said it was a return. I said I was interested in it, so we looked it over top to bottom and everything was there, the only flaw we could find on it was a little scratch on the bottom, so small you had to look hard to see it. He said he had to talk to the manager for approval to sell it. Manager came and said, sorry can't sell it, as it is a return, and could be damaged. I said we looked it all over and only saw a tiny scratch. Manager then said I see your point but the new ownership (Bass Pro I assume) no longer allows them to sell any returned items. Not long before, he had the authority to sell returned items at a discount, but now they had to go back to the manufacturer. He admitted it seemed dumb to spend $$$ to freight it back when they had a customer who would buy it, but I guess that is the policy now. Crazy part is it happened during Covid when a kayak was as scarce as hen's teeth. Seems like such a waste when I had a kid who would have happily paddled it down the river. | |
