Some instructors will inflate a balloon at the bottom of the swimming pool or instruction area under water, tie it off and let it pop as it goes to the surface.
Same thing that will happen to lung alveoli if a scuba diver holds their breath while ascending. If you are coughing up blood when you hit the surface, not a good thing.
