NW IA | For those of you with finished Holsteins where do you draw the line on moving them in this market?
Mine all go to auction and it seems at times that the 1700 Pound steers will bring the most per hundred.
Let's say for the sake of argument that I have some 1500 pounders that have a nice finish on them, (on stuffers since weaning) but have the potential to put on another 150+ pounds. What is your practice?
Many years ago I remember sitting in the sale barn next to a guy who moved a lot of cattle. His Holsteins were coming through the ring at about 1375 and selling under the top by quite a bit; I don't remember exact numbers. They would not have been considered to be "two ways"at that time. He said they were on corn silage and shelled corn with round bales in rings. Definitely not very fat. I asked why he didn't pour the coals to them for another 60+ days. He said, "Making money and topping the sale ain't the same thing."
Will try to add a picture. I always have a hard time making a good call based on a picture, but I think the brisket on one of the steers says, "done."
