SW Ohio | If you already have a decent loader then an excavator all the way. We have a 5 ton JCB mini-ex, its zero tail swing, hydraulic thumb, and hydraulic boom swing so you can dig right up against buildings or around corners. We use it for residential/commercial work but it also spends a lot of time on the farm doing tile repairs/installation, and clearing fencerows. Its pretty impressive how big of trees and boulders it will work with. Best thing with a mini-ex in the 5-7 ton range is you can easily throw it on a trailer behind a pick-up to move it around.
Regardless of what size excavator, IMO a quality hydraulic thumb and some type of quick coupler are must haves. Our JCB has a mechanical pin grabber, i can switch buckets in a few seconds, and can also put buckets on backwards which surprisingly comes in handy at times. | |
