My grandpa never wanted to see the pump closer than 10' from the bottom. He always said if you didn't maintain enough head over the pump, either your casing was too small, or you needed to find a different spot with more formation depth. He claimed having to set the pump dead on the bottom was a sign of a crappy well driller.
