"Average Fescue southern Iowa pasture..." .... sounds a lot to me like mediocre quality at best... and average to below average yield at best.  Make plans to kill some down each year, rotate, and seed a high quality grass if you want grass. If field can be cropped, maybe kill it down, and plant to row crops. But if it is old fescue - which it sounds like it is - start killing it down.
