| We dealt with polio here as we grew the feedlot side and transitioned to full TMR. Polio calves are about enough to make you want to quit the cattle business. Get them warm, lots of thiamine and dex, hope you caught it soon enough. We never seemed to save very many. We put them on good grass hay if still up. Good rumen activity means they go back to making their own thiamine.
We’ve never found the source, I just assume it’s multiple little things that keep us on the edge of sulfur toxicity. I rely heavily on qualified nutritionist for all rations. We feed thiamine at treatment levels to any cattle on feed. I just accept the cost. It’s better than the other option.
Good luck. I’d be pulling those cattle from whatever they are eating and finding a solution. Polio is nutrition based. | |
