Them girls need to be on cornstalks getting exercise.
This group has the run of about 35 acres of pasture and woods this time of year. I let them run out of hay for a few days so they'll go out and graze the corners and under some single hot wires.
People have been telling me for years that my cows are "too fat". But I like cows that look like wide loads all winter with tremendous rumen capacity. They keep warm all winter with just the woods and coulees to break the wind. These cattle are never under roof.
But with sub zero (f) temps and high winds coming for a few days, I set out some good bales in a sheltered area near my shed and loading ramp. It'll also make it easier to gather them all, especially the calves, when I move the whole group to the winter pastures near my house next week. |
