Subject: RE: Keeping an orphan calf healthy

West Central Illinois
I've had 4 sets of twins this year in the spring herd and 1 set i didn't find the other twin until around 24 hrs later. Cow only claimed 1 baby, I show up to check cows that cow has a nice lively calf following her that was born overnight, i tag it and move on with my life. The paddock they were in was right behind the landlord's house and his wife said she saw a fresh calf the day before right on edge of their yard, nice black one she said. The calf i tagged was red... I go looking around that area and sure enough i see the black calf. Hadn't been cleaned off even a bit by how crusty it was, couldn't really stand up unless you stood it up, took it to the cow and she wanted nothing to do with it so she got a ride home in the front rack basket of the 4 wheeler. Ended up taking powdered colostrum once you worked with her a bit. Calf did fine
