I know a guy who puts hay in rings for several days, but has the rings spaced far enough apart that he runs a hot wire between them, and moves it every day or two. Basically uses the same stuff people use for rotational grazing, just rotates to the next bale ring. Takes maybe 10 minutes to let cows to next feeding, and doesn't require starting a tractor.
