Subject: RE: Corn stalk vs. Bean straw

Sioux County, NWIA
I bale several thousand large round bean straw bales per year. Feed back is that it is a little less absorbent than stalks, but doesn’t break down as fast either. Also told it is less slippery underfoot than stalks.

I haven’t seen that it is harder on belts. It is more tricky to bale, depending on windrow formation. If it is a narrow windrow it is not a rookie job.

Most times see 1.75 to 2.25 bales/ acre.

DON’T try to bale it with moisture in the stems yet. Will rupture netwrap constantly. Let it get totally dry first which happens fast enough anyway.

I should add that the majority of bean straw I bale gets fed.
