Subject: RE: What Is Your Opinion On The Sound Guard Cab?

Western Oregon
I bought a 4430 in the fall of '72. No air stack above the hood and straight pipe. Never noticed the post. SG was a big update from the factory 4020 cab I had before. Bought a new 4630 and it did seem a little cluttered over there with tall air stack and muffler but post never bothered. Then went to 4240's with very short air stack way to the front, no problem. I really liked the 2550 with SG and straight pipe. Son has a 4040 straight pipe with turbo and the 2550. I really wanted a 86 series with cab but thought it would be more like a hydro 84 or 784 cab. I had a 454, a 574 and a 674, no cab. Had the dealer bring out a demo, the cab was a mess, huge shifter in the way, knees so close to dash, couldn't see 3pt or drawbar out back, no side console, felt like needed 4 arms compared to Powershift 4430. I hated the 66 IH series cabs, didn't like the tractor either. The big thing on SG was the steps. Just step up into cab, no pulling yourself up on a ladder with only 1 good arm, also the console. I could hold steering wheel with left arm or leg and do everything else right handed, even turning. I really liked the updated cabs on the 40 series, the better 466 engine without turbo on the 4240's, I had 6 of them during their run. They did everything the 4430 had done. I even went to 5-18" plow from 5-16". Never thought much of the 50-55-60 series 15 speed to update from the 8 speed, just more shifting. 40 series was mostly mechanical, easy to work on. I have run 1 early 7000 series and didn't really like it better, it was not P.S. Never liked the QR, everything I ran was powershift and hfwa. I farmed until '92 and because of health reasons had to get out....James
