I plug them anymore, if it leaks then I patch from inside.

Recently, I had a plug start leaking real slowly. It was not near a corner, so I took it apart to replace the plug with a patch. I buffed near the hole, then realized that a few broken steel belt wires were wanting to poke inward. I decided there was too much possibility of one of those sharp wires eventually going through a patch, so I just re-plugged it.

I suppose the process of opening up the nail hole with the plugging tools, broke some of the wires, and even bent them toward the inside.

I reckon that wouldn't be a consideration with anything other than steel belted tires.
