Subject: RE: cleaning rust from bulk diesel tank

Faunsdale, AL
Tank should be baffled inside so it’s going to be hard to really wash it out anyway. Try 5 gallons, see what you get. You need filters anyway.

I’ve cut up several old anhydrous tanks. Never had more than a few spots of surface rust in one that had been empty for 20 years with valves still on tank. Generally they seem to be oily inside.

We have never used any additives or micronutrients etc so that may be a difference from the tanks you will see.

Might be worth a look inside with a bore scope if you want one anyway or already have one. Wouldn’t take much washing diesel to pay for knowing there wasn’t anything much in there.

I did find an unexpected amount of flaky residue from something….not rust …….inside the manifold on the top of my storage tank when I replaced the pop-offs a couple years ago. Then I bought a load of recycled industrial refrigeration ammonia after that and did have to clean the strainer on my bar once in a 100 acres. So I’m not sure if it was some of the stuff that was already in the top of the empty tank or something that came in the transport from the plant. Have not had to clean strainer in previous years, so that’s still a question that’s unanswered.
