Subject: RE: 9510 feederhouse reverser not working

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
Speaking of dipsticks reminds me of a story my friend tells. He was in the Army and needed a dipstick for a 2 1/2 ton truck (Deuce and a half). They looked through the parts books but couldn't find one for the longest time.

Finally they found the listing. In true Military style it was listed as: Gauge, lubrication, non-electric.

But back to the dipstick on the reverser, mine is extremely difficult to read with the clear oil involved. It is difficult to see the level which should be in the cross hatched area. Any simple tricks to make this more obvious? I've considered drilling a few small holes through the tube but was afraid of weakening it. I can actually see the oil better on the inside of the tube but it is difficult to judge the level.

Another question about the dipstick area. I was looking through Deere parts for feeder house parts and noticed in the feeder house section for my 9770 that a breather kit is available. I can understand how this would work but why would such a kit be needed?

The kit consists of a special tee that attaches to the top of the reverser case, a hose, a breather and a new dipstick. I assume the new dipstick is needed since the original dipstick would not set at the same level due to the tee.

I tried blowing through the dipstick tube on mine and air comes out two holes toward the top. If I plug those holes with my fingers, I cannot blow through the tube. It appears that mine has some type of breather on top of the dipstick but it does not let the air out to equalize.

Another dipstick situation. I thought I might have a problem with the main gearcase on my combine since the dipstick there showed evidence of grinding on it. Someone mentioned that the previous owner might have ground off the paint on that dipstick to make it easier to read. Apparently that was it since I have not had any problems with the gear case.
