Subject: RE: 640FD flip-over installation question

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
Not a lot of help but I installed the flip over reel kit in my 635FD last year. The directions were pathetic and in some respects simply wrong. It was obvious that whoever wrote those instructions had never done the job.

Since my head is a 35' rather than a 40' such as yours, my reel is a single piece where yours has the split and support in the center. Our switch over would have gone better had we NOT read the installation instructions.

I was afraid that we would need to support the entire reel on both ends. We were able to do one end at a time and used my small tractor and loader to support the reel. We worked on the left end and changed it first while just leaving the right end alone. We were able to install the bolts loosely on the left end with the new assembly. There was enough slop to allow the left end to be attached while the right end was still original. We then moved to the right end and changed it. We then went back and tightened all the bolts concerned. We turned the reel around a few times by hand to check for any obstacles. We then tried it with the combine and it was fine.

Since you have two separate reels, you procedure may be slightly different.

Our kit included some plastic wiper blades that can be installed on the outer portion of the reel covers. The instructions didn't make any suggestions about them. I've noticed that some folks don't use them at all, I spaced them around evenly. I have seen some installs where two wipers were stacked together to make a thicker wiper. Longer bolts were needed. I did not have any problems with my install (might be different this year) so I plan on leaving mine as is.

With the mess our bean fields are this year due to excessive rain which lead to replants and general unevenness, it may be a challenge no matter what.

I did not have any wrapping problems after the flip-over change over like I had the year before. Maybe that was due to conditions but I think it was worthwhile.
