On one hand, finding stuff in fields that damages things is the nature of custom work. On the other hand, when the farmer leaves something in the field knowing the harvester can find it, they have some culpability.
I feel like I don’t know enough about this situation to know how I’d expect the bill to be paid. If they’re a large and/or long term customer that usually does pretty good about not causing problems but dropped the ball this time, I might just eat it. If they have a history of this kind of expensive neglect, they’d be paying for their own screwups.
It might also depend on your rates. If you have bargain basement pricing for your services, any extras and surprises need to be charged to the customers. If you have top rate pricing, you might figure on absorbing more incidents that arise.
So how’s that for a non answer. I should go into politics.
