I'd cut the oil filter open and see what you find there.

I assume we are talking about a 3.9 B series or basically 4 cylinders of the popular 5.9 cummins so parts should be easy to come by.

Don's diesel shows kits for under 1,000 for them.

If the filter looks scary I'd pull the engine and tear it down then decide which way you want to jump. Cheapy overhaul/full blown overhaul/junkyard engine.

Pulling it apart before something completely scatters may save you a lot of money.

Condition of the machine and how tired the rest of the components of the machine should be considered too but I can remember a time when people said an 1845C was one of the best skid loaders there was.
