Northeast Missouri | It depends on the crop. For corn, the concave spacing should correlate with the cob size. Set the speed only as fast as it takes to remove the grain and leave the cobs as whole as possible. Cobs split lengthwise, concave too tight. Cobs split crosswise, concave too loose.
For beans, you want to be able to take the crop through in one motion of the cylinder. If the beans are ready to thresh the plants will look mostly whole on the walkers looking like only the beans are gone. Green stemmed plants, uneven ripening, etc., will necessitate different settings. The size of the crop mat will dictate how wide to set the concave. Set the combine to conditions, regardless of the recommended settings.
