I had it apart today.
The wire slid back in very easily until it got to the gun area.
Then it snagged,
I probably should have clipped the end first.
Instead I cut most of the wire off, reattached the cable, and then run the wire through the cable with no issues.
I did blow some, not a lot, of rust out of each end first.
How do I make a wire welder work correctly?
