IF the bit is really chewed up I grind with a bench grinder at least the tip to get rid of the chipped out places
I think with the DD I have most trouble was with split point bits chucking correctly and the plastic chuck slipping --A course stone on the DD did help SOME
I have read the DD doesn't get better with age just looser --we've owned 3 DD sharpeners --last one the 750 that does up to 3/4"
Any trouble if you buy one ask --
