Subject: New Holland 648 Round Baler in 2024

Central Western VA Mountains
Seen a few New Holland 648 balers within buying distance - know nothing about them other than older posts indicate they are/were a good baler. Understood they are a 4x5 baler, I’d be making 4x4 bales. Oddly enough, my horse hay customers prefer twine to net - but would consider a net/twine model.

What is the good, bad and ugly of these balers in 2024?

What should I look for when checking one of these balers out? Some of these have a wide pickup with short augers at the ends and what appears to be some kind of stuffer behind the pickup. I think I saw a 644 with a narrow pickup that did not have the stuffers? Are the augers and stuffers to be avoided? Is there substantial differences between the 648, 644 and 640 as they look somewhat similar. I gather the 648 is the newest of the bunch, which is why I’m considering one of them and the price point that pencils out on our farm.

Older, but decent round baler - what are your thoughts and advice on a New Holland 648 in 2024?

Any sage advice is much appreciated!
