Michigan | Here's a link to a video showing a welder repairing a break almost exactly the same as yours. I have no idea who he is, but he does a good repair job and he's not as annoying as most repair videos on youtube.

Key is adding a vertical bar on top of the axle. He also uses a horizontal bar under the axle. If it was me, I'd probably try to fab up some type of truss structure under the axle but it's hard to argue that his repairs are not a huge improvement over the stock axle.
