I use a sawsall instead of a grinder to cut them off.  Either one works well.  As mentioned above, tire irons, vice grips, plenty of soap along with a lot of patience will finish the job.  The tire does not like to be cussed and will make itself even harder to get off if you talk to it in a bad way, at least that has been my experience.
