Subject: RE: Dealerships

I sell some short lines of equipment.... I often find it difficult to know how to best service the customer when it comes to trades.

There is a crowd of people who do not want to deal with selling a used piece and they will gladly trade it in on the new and be happy leaving a little margin on it for dealer to refurbish and resell the used item.
There is another group that wants to buy the new piece at a cash and carry price. They can handle selling the old one and it is no problem
The trouble is when they want a cash and carry price (very thin margin) on the new and full retail value for the trade. There is a risk involved on ownership of the used piece. Sometimes it's not worth taking it on.
There are some items that I have good success with in the used market and there are others that are a pain.
I do not deal in combines however due to the high $$ involved, extremely high amount of wear parts, fluctuating used market, high tech equipment, I can see these being very challenging for dealers to and end users to manage in the used market. The new huge combines and 48 plus row planters could both be put in that category.
