Everything has a market value. Your equipment, his equipment, his time, your time, all have a value. If you want/ need what he has for sale make an offer for him to consider or buy somewhere else. He is not under any obligation to take your trade. It sounds like he is confident in his ability to sell what he has at the set price and doesn’t want to invest any time or effort into your trade.
You're correct, he isn't under obligation to take trades, but, 98% of customers have a trade, and expect you to trade for it at a reasonable value...now, each definition of reasonable may differ, but it's still an expectation!!
Would you deal with a car dealership that refused to take your 6 year old car in on trade?
