Subject: RE: Airplane tires on gravity box

Faunsdale, AL
Wow….I think I would contact them and see if they’ll do anything to replace them. Sounds like they cut too much out of the beads. Were yours on one piece drop center wheels or two piece?

I always thought if they didn’t remove so much that the tire would fit the rim tighter and be stronger to boot. Had that discussion with them and they said there’s two rings of wire in the beads and they have to cut between them. I even bought a big one that hadn’t been cut to see if there was any way I could grease it up and get it on a 16.1 rim…….no luck there. Did manage to force a narrow uncut tire on about a 15” rim but have never gotten it to hold air for long. Think I might be able to use some bead sealer and get that thing to stay sealed but haven’t messed with it in years.

The simplest way is to buy them with the bolt together rims (tire beads not cut) without stopleak which does little to nothing when used in a tube, and if you’re running in thorns either buy them already foamed or send them to be foamed. Of course if they have stopleak in them, you can always take wheel apart and put in a new dry tube before sending for foaming. The place that did mine said they had to hold air, so I put a cheap MR14/15 radial tube in the ones that were flat before I sent them.

I needed two 11.00-16 front tractor tires last year to replace a set of the GENSCO no-flats tires on my 4440. Decided I put so few hours on it anymore and seldom use it in briars, I just didn’t want the hassle of the airplane tires so I bought 3 rib imports and planned to run tubeless with GENSCO stopleak. Tire shop said the price included mounting and after fighting new tires trying to get them to seat the beads, I decided that was a good deal. When I went to pick them up, they had tubes in….. GRRRRRR! They couldn’t get them to seat tubeless or didn’t want to spend the time. Next time I bought a 30.5-32 radial from them, I told the manager, just take the mounting fee off the price and I’ll do it at home, so I don’t get charged for a tube!
