Subject: RE: No Deere at Big Iron

Last time I was involved in any sort of show like that (as a Deere salesman), we spent a couple days bringing equipment up there and getting it ready. Then sat at the show for several days talking to people from way out of the area who would never become a customer, including a couple weekend days most years. Then when we went back to pick stuff up, we found that people had gone around unplugging wiring harnesses on the machinery, so it wouldn't run correctly. So we spent a whole day screwing around fixing all of that and getting machinery home. Then when we got back we had to clean up all the machinery to put back on the lot.

Never once in almost 20 years of doing this did I make a sale as a result of that show. And I worked on straight commission, so it was essentially donated time to sit there unable to conduct actual business. The company wouldn't even buy our lunch or pay for parking, so it cost money having to eat expensive fair food and park in any lot within a half mile of the booth.

On top of that, Deere quit helping pay for any of the booth rent or transportation costs to go to the show, so it was all on the dealer. Just a huge waste of money and resources for both the dealer and the actual employees at that point.

So yeah, I understand why they don't do it anymore.
