NCFL | Had some fun yesterday and today. Get to have some more tomorrow. Engine drive coupling on our Amadas self propelled failed while picking some tough peanuts. Machine is 2001 model and has about 7000 hours on it, so it doesn't owe us anything. Of course it had a partially loaded basket of high moisture peanuts, so the first step was to make up some lines to attach to the dump cylinders and a tractor to get the basket dumped. All this while dodging typical Florida afternoon thunderstorms. Finally got an that done and knocked off for the day.
Tore into it this morning. Stripped the front of the engine cowling, the left side drive covers and the muffler off. Next we pulled the header drive pump and brackets off the front of the gearcase. Drained the gearcase. Blocked the rear of the engine up. Unhooked and capped what seemed like fifty hydraulic lines, but was probably only a dozen or so, all while perched on the edge of the machine or standing on forks on the loader. Glad I've got some good help that's not afraid of heights.
Finally got everything loose and pulled the gearcase off, confirming coupler failure. While we're in there we'll replace the rear main engine seal as well as the gearcase input shaft seal and several of the scary bad looking hydraulic hoses.
I'm sure plenty of you grain farmers have probably seen this done before, but this is a new one for us peanut guys. Marvelous tearing into all this in the middle of a field six miles from the shop, but I'm guessing they seldom fail in the barnyard.
New parts should be here tomorrow. At least the machine is down while we're dealing with liquid sunshine, so not missing a lot of picking time today.
