In terms of grain harvesting ,did the old combines do a good job of harvesting?I know way harder to be the driver and slower than modern but did they have harvestable grain efficiency ?
Because of the dry conditions so harvest could be spread out without major grain loss, so more acres could be put through one machine the west coast had big combines very early. Holt was one of the first, but Harris was not far behind. I don't know the model numbers Harris used , but my dad always claimed the Harris 88 was their last tractor pulled combine turned into a self propelled. They did a very good job with the conditions in the west in small grains. They could put out as good of quality grain as any modern combine, Just took more time adjusting thing.
In California we never used the bushel system of measure. The truck went across the scale in pounds and never converted back to bushels. So I apologies. In ton to the acre conditions in wheat and barley 30 ton and 30 acres would be a good day. Everything going well more was very possible.
In the California Central Valley Harris built the largest combine of the time. I always knew them as the Giant Harris which was about twice as big as the Harris 88 model (the giant was tractor pulled, as far as I know they never made it in self propelled, or hillside). |
