As DIESEL said, check the splined couplers between the transmission and final drives.
It could also be the splined coupler in between the hydro motor and the transmission. Have to remove hydro motor to replace it, but don't need to remove transmission.
Had that splined coupler on input side of transmission fail in a 2388 once, sounded awful like you describe.
