Our 2588 had the same symptoms when the cross in the differential sheared off. With a transmission jack on concrete it’s a 1.5 to pull out and no special tools are needed to pull the differential. It takes the same parts as a 1066 differential.
Make sure it’s not one of your couplers going out to your final drive .
