I assume that has something to do with the seal. Measure the housing, shaft, impeller etc and see if there’s a standard shaft seal that can replace the old one without having that cup in there. WWGrainger has a decent selection of seals, but their online catalog makes it very hard to find what you’re looking for. I have better luck with an old paper catalog.

Had one on a 2-53 Detroit diesel in my 435 JD that went bad. Turns out the required OD was slightly too big for the closest available seal. Gutted the old seal and used the cup for a shim and it’s been leak free for last 20 years.

I’ve got a replacement system for the seal in water pump of the D318 Cat that doesn’t require the expensive impeller with the ceramic seat made on it. The bigger ones are really easier to figure out a fix than smaller.
