Subject: Hopper Clearance and Augers

Central Iowa

I'm looking at a different semi hopper trailer and am wondering how much clearance I really need.  I'm using a Westfield MKX130-84 auger and it measures 10" to the top of the metal and 16" to the top of the rubber extension on the hopper.  Would a 16" clearance hopper be too tight?  I already have one with 18" clearance and it seemed to work last year.  My yards I set up the auger are fairly level, and if they aren't I go get a loader and make them!

Hauling to the ethanol plants it's nice having a little lower hopper so I don't have to sweep as much if I open it too far, but probably need to make sure I can get it over the auger during harvest.
