Black Hawk County, IA | Pixall’s and Byron/Oxbo’s have been driving their cornheads for decades hydraulically. Pretty hefty dedicated pump, and two drive motors. Could run 14/16 row knife heads in green corn 6 mph most of the time. Infinite speed control, and plenty of power to reverse a plugged head. Adding the pump drive to an existing machine would be just one issue, and a big one at that. Controlling the flow wouldn’t be difficult, and mounting the drive motors is definitely doable. Remember too, hydraulics are not a terribly efficient method of power transfer. We figured it took 70-100 hp to drive my 14 row heads. Maybe that is not an issue in your case, but short of a total reconfiguration of your chopper’s engine/drive train, I don’t think it’s a plausible solution. J | |
