SW OH | I'm not a paint for looks painter. I'm a glob it on there good so it won't rust painter. Like other said, prep is the most important part. Every square inch needs to be scuffed. The spots that show a little rust need more attention. If it's not smooth like a new truck, it needs more sanding. Color paint does not stick well to bare metal, that's what primer is for. Adding a hardener to your color will help retain a bright finish that does not dull in a year.
I use a paint pot from Chinese freight. I can set a gallon can in the pot. Much less clean up than pouring the paint in the pot.
