Subject: Had an unusual episode

Sanilac Co. Michigan
So, this goes back a few weeks near the end of oat harvest.

Had the combine (R52 Gleaner/Deutz 6 cyl) in the yard and I did my usual morning maintenance. Greased what needed greased, climbed into the engine compartment, checked belts and oil level. Oil was just at the fill line, so added a couple quarts. Engine was blown out and the compartment and motor was clean enough to eat off of. Now, I hadn't changed filters or oil yet this year as I really hadn't had had all that many, maybe 80hr, since last serviced.

So, needed to grease the head, but needed to start the engine and lift the head to do it properly. Did so, climbed down and saw black engine oil running big time down the left side of the combine! Shut it down to investigate.

Come to find out, the gasket between the oil filter and the filter head decided to blow out! Why? I don't know. Glad I didn't just run off to the field, or she'd pretty much be junk before I would catch it.

So, what would make this happen? I've never remotely had this kind of thing happen before. It was an Agco branded filter, not Deutz, but I can't imagine that would make a difference. Installed it like you normally would, oil on the rubber gasket and strongly hand tightened it.

Anyone else had something similar happen?
