Getting a CDL requires going to an approved school, a class A in Iowa is close to $5k.



I looked at Iowa's requirements, and it can be done cheaper, but a farmer/driver would have to spend time teaching. Unless an autoshift truck is used, it can be hard to teach shifting a stick shift.

Btw, when I got my CDL type license, I only had to take a paper test. Then around 1977, a driving test had to be done. Back then, it was not called a CDL license, and it covered all vehicles.
