If everything germinated and stayed alive the first year you could use less than 5 lb per acre. Alfalfa germination and first year survival is very poor. We no-till 16 to 20lb with a JD 750 at 1/2" (as shallow as it will go) and will be using less seed next year now that our 750 is freshly rebuild. Have always used small seed boxes. Never tried with the large box, the small one is hard enough to get set correct.

Guessing alfalfa stand with a picture is like guessing test weight in grain. Count your plants and stems per sq ft. There are many published recommendations on stand density.
