Had the same problem with my 2020 GMC. I use the WD-40 Dry lube which doesnt attract dust like the regular WD40 does. Also if you battery is getting bad it will have a hard time releasing the tailgate. I was having trouble releasing my tailgate and noticed the engine was turning over slow some times. Put in a new battery and the tailgate opened on the first try
