I have found if you are underpowered you don't tear the chopper up as much. JD 4230 with turbo just about right. JD 4440 set at 185 smokes a few slip clutches with 540 driveline.
We have a lot less issues since we went to running our 15' batwing with a MAXXUMM 115 compared to the Magnhm 275 we use to use it on. Plus saves a lot of hours on more valuable tillage / pla ter tractor.
