Subject: Explain motor amps and service factor to me

Central Nebraska

I have a pivot that we added a corner system to this spring.  Every time I have started it since then the electric well for the pump has shut off and the overload tripped.  If I reset it one time it would run for ever.  Today, it did it while I was watching it fill the system and it did it again so I investigated further.  The nameplate on the motor says 73 amps and the motor overload was set at 67.  When filling the pivot the motor was running 73, 76, and 73 amps.  I adjusted the overload to 73 amps and it worked.  Where does the 1.15 service factor figure into this?  Does that mean the motor can run up to 15% above its FLA for a short time period?  That would be 84 amps.
