I think you're on the right track. We ran a gas 686 IH for many years and it worked OK. Really can only go so fast so the mower can do it's job. We had a 4020 for several years and mowed tall steep levee grass, pasture and roadsides and it handled it well. Reeds canarygrass will pull hard but you have to go slow anyway for the mower to cut. Now have 6155M or a 7810 and they rarely pull down much. That's been our experience.
